I like to make turnovers. I just made 4 apple turnovers and some cups filled with the filling and a topping using my apple cobbler topping. This will make a nice snack for after dinner.

Have a craving for apple pie but don't feel like making a whole pie? Give these turnovers a try. They taste just like mini apple pies. We opted for the puff pastry and loved how flaky they became. The outside gets a sugary crust and the inside is filled with juicy apples. You can enjoy this for dessert, a snack, or even as a breakfast treat. Test Kitchen Avatar The Test Kitchen

Ingredients

  • 2
    tart apples, chopped
  • 2 Tbsp
    lemon juice
  • 1/2 c
    walnuts, chopped
  • 4 Tbsp
    brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp
    pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/4 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1
    egg, beaten for egg wash
  • 2 Tbsp
    sugar, for topping
  • 1 pkg
frozen ready made pie dough or frozen puff pastry
  • 1-2 Tbsp
    all-purpose flour

How to Make Apple Turnovers

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Thaw pie dough or puff pastry.
  2. Add 1 - 2 Tbsp of flour to your surface before you put the dough or puff pastry down so they do not stick.
  3. Unroll sheets and cut each sheet into 4 pieces.
  4. Peel and chop apples and add to bowl with lemon juice.
  5. Add walnuts, brown sugar, and spices. Mix together. If apples are juicy, you can add a little flour to the mixture to absorb the juice.
  6. Fill half of one pastry piece with a spoonful of apple mixture.
  7. Fold over to form into a turnover.
  8. Rub inside edge with egg wash and seal. Repeat with remaining pastry pieces.
  9. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper. Lay turnovers on paper. Make 2 or 3 slits on each turnover, to let steam escape.
  10. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle lightly with sugar.
  11. Place in oven and bake for 20 minutes. You can use other fruits for filling.
