Ingredients For apple date betty

    slices of country white or any other bread cut into 3/4" pcs.
  • 6 Tbsp
    unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 c
    sugar, divided
  • 6 Tbsp
    apple cider, divided
  • 5
    granny smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 3/4" pcs. approx. 2 1/2 lbs.
  • 3/4 c
    chopped dates prefer medjool (can use raisins as alternative)
  • 4 tsp
    all purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp
    lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 1/4 tsp
    ground all spice
  • heavy cream, for serving or whipped topping

How To Make apple date betty

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Scatter bread on a baking sheet until dry and light browned to resemble croutons. Approx 12 mins. Toss halfway through baking.

    Crush half the bread to make crumbs. In a large bowl combine butter, 1/4 c. sugar. 3 Tbl. cider. Then add bread cubes and crumbs.

    Combine apples, dates, flour, lemon juice, salt allspice, and remaining 1/2 c. sugar and 3 Tbl. cider. Stir in 1/2 c. bread mixture.

    Transfer to an 8" square baking dish top with remaining bread mixture. Cover with foil and bake 40-55 mins. ovens vary. Uncover then bake until top is golden approx. 15 mins.

    To serve top with heavy cream in bowls, or can use a whipped topping or ice cream.
