Did you know: trail mix has been eaten by Native Americans for thousands of years? It originally included buffalo meat but the more familiar combination of nuts, raisins and chocolate most trail mixes include today, actually dates back to the 1910s, when outdoorsman Horace Kephart recommended it in his popular camping guide, titled, "The Book of Camping & Woodcraft: A Guidebook For Those Who Travel In The Wilderness."

Ingredients For trail mix cookie bars

  • 1/3 c
    butter
  • 1 c
    crushed graham crackers
  • 1/2 c
    rolled oats
  • 1 can
    (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 c
    flaked coconut
  • 3/4 c
    baking m&ms
  • 3/4 c
    raisins
  • 1 c
    whole peanuts

How To Make trail mix cookie bars

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • 2
    Place butter in a 9x13 inch baking pan, heat in oven about 5 minutes or until butter is melted. Remove from oven. Tilt pan to coat bottom evenly. Sprinkle crushed graham crackers and oats , toss and coat with melted butter evenly and press into bottom of pan. .

    Sprinkle with m&m baking pieces, raisins and peanuts.

    Drizzle with sweetened condensed milk and sprinkle flaked coconut.

    Bake about 25 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.

    Cool in pan on wire rack. When completely cooled, cut into bars.
