Orange and Chocolate Meringue Kisses

This was an experiment to use up some egg whites left over from Christmas cookie baking - I love orange and chocolate together. I did not want to make them too colorful, but more coloring can be added if desired.

    egg whites
  • 1/8 tsp
  • 1/4 tsp
    cream of tarter
  • 1/3 - 1/2 c
    ultra-fine sugar
  • 1/4 tsp
    orange extract
  • 1/2 tsp
    orange rind, grated
  • ·
    drops of red and yellow food color
  • 1/4 c
    mini chocolate chips

How to Make Orange and Chocolate Meringue Kisses


  1. Preheat oven to 200ºF.
  2. In a glass or metal bowl, whip the egg whites until they're frothy. Add salt and cream of tartar
  3. Add sugar, one tablespoon at a time, until stiff peaks form and the meringue looks glossy.
  4. Add the grated orange peel and a few drops of food color until it looks slightly orange. (If the color is too pink, you can always call them Blood Orange and Chocolate Meringue Kisses!)
  5. Add mini-chocolate chips.
  6. Scoop into a zip lock bag. Cut off the corner and squeeze kisses onto 2 parchment covered cookie sheets.
  7. Bake in oven for 2 hours. Remove and let cool on cookie sheets.
