I just could not keep it back any longer. I was doing some research on one of my moms cookbooks, and found this recipe. Mom made this for my 1st birthday and made it for my birthday until my 20th birthday. Her cookbook went back to 1910, this was really a good find.

Ingredients For granny ruth's fruit drops

  • 1 c
    shortening
  • 2 can
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 2
    eggs
  • 1/2 c
    soured milk, such as buttermilk
  • 3 1/2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 1/2 c
    broken pecans pieces
  • 2 c
    candied cherries halved
  • 2 c
    cut up dates

    Heat oven to 400 degrees.

    Mix shortening, sugar, and eggs well. stir in soured milk.

    Measure flour and sift well.

    Blend dry ingredients stir in. Stir pecans, cherries and dates. Chill at least 1 hour.

    Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough about 2 inches apart on a lightly greased baking sheet.

    Place a pecan half on each cookie, if desired.

    Bake 8 to 10 minutes until almost no imprint remains when touched lightly.
