These can be made using the original recipe with chocolate chips, or you may substitute raisins. Often I will make and then divide my basic dough in half, and then add chocolate chips to half, raisins to half.

The cookies in the picture were made using raisins, as my husband and son like them better than the chocolate chips.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c
    all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 c
    shortening
  • 3/4 c
    brown sugar
  • 3/4 c
    white sugar
  • 2
    eggs
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    hot water
  • 12 oz
    pkg. chocolate chips**
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 2 c
    old fashioned oats

How to Make Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

Step-by-Step

  1. **May substitute 1 to 1 1/2 c. raisins for chocolate chips.
  2. Put all ingredients into large bowl. Mix well with hands.
  3. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheet (I use silpat sheets on mine).
  4. Bake at 400° about 6 minutes or until very lightly browned. Do not allow to brown very much.
  5. Makes approximately 4 dozen cookies.
