Please note that cinnamon oil is not an essential ingredient, it's up to you whether you use it or not. If you do use it, the 1/2 tsp of cinnamon oil is a maximum amount that you will want to use. This is cinnamon oil, not just cinnamon flavoring. Older children will enjoy helping with these, but be careful, the candy mixture is very hot!

Blue Ribbon Recipe

These apples are just like the ones you had at a carnival as a kid. The hard candy coating is sweet with a slight cinnamon flavor. Super easy to make, these would be great to have at a kid's party or for Halloween. We loved these with a crisp red apple, but have fun experimenting with different types of apples.

Ingredients For carnival candy apples

  • 2 c
    white sugar
  • 1/2 c
    white corn syrup
  • 1/2 c
    water
  • 1 tsp
    butter
  • 1/2 tsp
    cinnamon oil, at most
  • 1 tsp
    red food coloring
  • 15 sm
    apples
  • 15
    popsicle sticks

How To Make carnival candy apples

Test Kitchen Tips
Use a candy thermometer to make sure you've cooked the coating to the hard crack stage.
  • Stems removed from apples on a cutting board.

    Remove stems from apples.
  • Washing and drying red apples.

    Wash and dry apples.
  • Popsicle sticks placed inside red apples.

    Place a popsicle stick in each apple, set aside.
  • Sugar and water simmering on stove until hard crack stage.

    Cook sugar, corn syrup, water, butter, cinnamon oil and red food coloring to hard crack stage.
  • Rolling apples in the syrup mixture.

    Roll apples in syrup.
  • Dipped apples cooling on aluminum foil.

    Set on greased foil to cool.
