Most cultures have some type of tea cake, and this is an old-fashioned Southern recipe. These are simple cake-like butter cookies that are buttery and not overly sweet. In the olden days, these were served with afternoon tea. This excellent tea cake recipe makes a small batch of cookies and tastes like they came from a bakery.

Ingredients For granny's old-fashion tea cakes

  • 1 1/2 c
    all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 c
    granulated sugar
  • 1/4 c
    butter
  • 1 lg
    egg
  • 3 Tbsp
    milk
  • 1/2 tsp
    vanilla extract

How To Make granny's old-fashion tea cakes

  • Sugar, egg, vanilla, and salt added to butter.

    Cream butter; add sugar and a well-beaten egg. Add salt and vanilla extract.
  • Sifting flour and baking soda.

    Sift flour and baking powder.
  • Adding flour to the butter.

    Alternate adding the flour mixture.
  • Adding milk to the butter.

    Then the milk.
  • Ingredients completely combined.

    Continue until everything is mixed.
  • Rolling dough and cutting into circles.

    Roll 1/8 inch thick and cut with a biscuit cutter.
  • Baking the tea cakes.

    Bake on a parchment-lined baking sheet at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes.
