Made some healthy waffles tonight with a wheat berry whole grain baking mix, with a homemade strawberry sauce. Delish!! Thought this would be a great breakfast for your sweetheart on Valentine's Day! And yes, a few drops of red food coloring for red waffles. ;)

Ingredients

  • 1 c
    baking mix (used a berry whole grain mix)
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 Tbsp
    oil
  • 3/4 c
    milk
  • 3
    drops red food coloring (optional)
  • STRAWBERRY SAUCE

  • 1 qt
    strawberries hulled and quartered (about 24 oz)
  • 1/4 c
    sugar
  • 1/4 c
    water
  • 1
    orange, zested and juiced
  • 1 Tbsp
    cornstarch

How to Make Red Sweetheart Waffles With Strawberry Sauce

Step-by-Step

  1. Spray and heat up waffle iron.
  2. In a small pot mix, strawberries, sugar, water, and orange juice, and zest.
  3. Cook on med-high until bubbly. Add cornstarch and whisk until it starts to thicken.
  4. Turn to simmer and slightly mash. Set aside for waffles.
  5. Mix waffle ingredients adding food coloring (optional) until the desired color. Stir.
  6. Following manufacturer instructions for your waffle maker, pour batter into the waffle maker and cook.
  7. Assemble 2 waffles top with strawberry sauce, dust with powdered sugar, and whipped cream!
