This does require an overnight soak in the fridge. I usually only make this once a year for Christmas morning breakfast. It's a special treat that my kids look forward to. Very rich, extremely decadent! Sometimes makes an appearance Easter morning as well. Enjoy!!

Rich and decadent, this french toast casserole recipe needs to be saved for special occasions. The praline topping is what makes this breakfast casserole special. The texture is almost like a rich bread pudding. But, since the slices are intact, it is truly french toast. We used French bread (instead of an egg-style roll) which allowed us to easily portion 2 slices per person. And, we drizzled a little syrup on it but, honestly, it was delicious plain tool.   • 8
    egg knot dinner rolls, large size, or you may use 1 large loaf of French bread
  • 8 large
  • 2 c
    half and half
  • 1 c
  • 2 Tbsp
  • 1 tsp
  • 1 tsp
  • 1/2 tsp
  • dash(es)

  • 2 stick
    butter, softened
  • 1 c
    packed brown sugar, light or dark, i use dark
  • 1 1/2 c
    chopped walnuts, you can use pecans if you prefer
  • 2 Tbsp
    light corn syrup
  • 1 tsp
  • 1/2 tsp

How to Make Christmas Morning French Toast


  1. Slice egg knot rolls into 1-inch slices, you should be able to get three slices from each roll. If using French bread loaf, slice into 20 1-inch slices. Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9x13 inch baking dish overlapping the slices a bit.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half and half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Beat with an electric mixer or wisk until well blended, but not too bubbly.
  3. Pour egg mixture over the bread slices, making sure they are all covered evenly.
  4. Spoon some of the mixture in between each bread slice.
  5. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.
  6. In the morning, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all praline ingredients until well blended.
  7. Spread praline topping evenly over the bread slices getting some in between slices.
  8. Bake for 40 minutes in a preheated oven until puffy and light golden brown.
  9. Serve with your favorite maple syrup. Enjoy!!
