My mother made these for us since we were young, and she made them when I married, too. I made them for my daughters (who loved them) and now my grandchildren look forward to making them - helping to cut the holes and dipping them in the sugar. They are delicious served warm.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

This is an easy and budget-friendly doughnut recipe kids (big and small) will love. Before there was a doughnut shop on every corner, this was a popular way to make doughnuts at home. It's simple and not time-consuming. Outside they're golden brown; inside they're soft and fluffy. We loved coating them in cinnamon sugar, but powdered sugar or a chocolate glaze would be delicious, too. Serve these for brunch, a special breakfast, or just because it's Tuesday.

How To Make canned biscuit sugar donuts

Test Kitchen Tips
We used a 1M piping tip to cut the center holes in the biscuits. A wooden BBQ skewer is perfect for flipping the doughnuts and removing them from the oil. Also, we did drain the doughnuts on a paper towel for a few minutes before coating.
  • Heating oil in a cast iron skillet.
    1
Heat the cooking oil in a small skillet.
  • Sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.
    2
In a shallow dish, mix the sugar and cinnamon well.
  • Cutting holes in the biscuits.
    3
Separate the biscuits and cut a 1" hole in the center with a cookie cutter (I use a water bottle lid). Save the cut out holes to cook, too.
  • Frying biscuits in hot oil.
    4
Drop 3 or 4 biscuits into the hot oil and cook until golden brown.
  • Frying the opposite side of the biscuit.
    5
Flip them over and cook the opposite side. Do the same thing with the holes.
  • Coating biscuits in cinnamon sugar.
    6
Remove the donuts from the oil and dredge them in the sugar mixture. Place on a separate plate to cool.

Note: You could coat with powdered sugar instead.
