  • 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 1/4 c
    butter, softened
  • 1/4 c
    milk, warm

    eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 Tbsp

  • 2 1/4 c
    bread flour

How to Make PORTUGESE SWEET BREAD

Step-by-Step

  1. Combine yeast, 1/2 t sugar and water in warm water in bowl and stir to mix. Put butter in warm milk, add remaining sugar, mix well. Add to yeast mixture and stir to combine. Reserve small amount of beaten egg for glaze, add remaining eggs and salt to yeast mixture and mix well. Add 2 cups of flour, one cup at a time, kneading into soft dough. Turn onto floured board, knead until smooth and elastic, using only buttered bowl, turn to coat. Cover and let rise until doubled.
  2. Punch down, shape into ball and place in oven-safe buttered skillet or bread pan. Cover and let rise until doubled. Brush top with remaining well beaten egg and bake at 350 for about 30 minutes , until bread is a rich, dark, shining color and sounds hollow when rapped with knuckles.
  3. ENJOY!
