Scones don't always have to be sweet. I love the combination of pears and sweet onions and add to that a cheesy smoked Gouda flavor...mmmmmm. Smoky yummy goodness! Perfect when you're craving something a little different.

    firm pear, peeled & cored
  • 1/4 c
    vidalia or sweet onion, diced
  • 1 1/2 c
  • 1/4 c
  • 1/2 Tbsp
    baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 6 Tbsp
    cold butter, diced (no subs)
  • 1/2 c
    shredded smoked gouda
  • 1/4 c
    heavy whipping cream
  • 1 large
  • ·
    egg wash (egg & water)

How to Make Smoky Sweet Onion Pear Scones


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.Slice pear into about 16 slices. Place in single layer on prepared pan. On same pan, spread out diced onion in a single layer as well. Bake in preheated oven for about 15 minutes. You want slices dry to the touch but not crispy. Allow to cool completely.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine cold butter, shredded Gouda, cream, and egg. Only stir until just combined. Dice cooked pear, and stir it and baked onion into butter mixture.
  4. Mix butter mixture into flour mixture just until it begin to come together. (I mix with my hands so I am sure to not over mix.) It's ok to have large chunks of butter as this will add moisture to the scone as it bakes. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface, and mold into a disc shape. Press it out with your fingers until it is about 1/2 inch in thickness. Cut into 8 triangular pieces.
  5. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper again. Place each scone on prepared pan leaving roughly 2 inches between the scones. Brush each scone with an egg wash and sprinkle each scone with a little sugar, if desired. Bake @ 375 degrees F. for about 20 minutes until firm and golden brown. Cool on wire rack.
