I got this recipe out of an old cook book of my mothers she used this recipe for coffee cakes, orange bow knots, clover leaf roll and several others. There was nothing better than coming home on a real cold day and coming through the door to the smell of fresh baked bread always brings back a happy memory.

Ingredients For plain roll dough

  • 1 pkg
    active dry yeast (or cake conpressed yeast)
  • 1/4 c
    water
  • 1 c
    milk (scalded)
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp
    sugar
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp
    shortening
  • 3 1/2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1 md
    egg
  • rich version

How To Make plain roll dough

    Soften dry yeast in water (110 degrees) in a small bowl
  • 2
    Add milk, sugar, shortening, and salt. cool to lukewarm. I do this in my stand mixer.

    Add 1 cup of flour; beat well .
  • 4
    beat in yeast and egg.
  • 5
    gradually add in the rest of the flour to form a soft dough, beating well.

    cover and let rise in a warm place (82 degrees) till double (1 1/2 to 2 hours)

    Turn out on lightly floured surface and shape as desired.
