Ingredients For bogue biscuits

  • 1 1/4 c
    buttermilk
  • 1/4 tsp
    baking soda
  • 3 1/3 c
    self-rising flour
  • 1/8 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    sugar
  • sm
    egg-size butter crisco

How To Make bogue biscuits

  • 1
Preheat oven to 425. Mix buttermilk and baking soda together and set aside. Grease biscuit pan or iron skillet very well.
  • 2
Blend well together the flour, salt and sugar then make a hole in center of flour and put in the crisco. You can use the regular crisco or lard if you prefer.
  • 3
Cut in the crisco with a fork and gradually add buttermilk and work small amounts of flour so you can knead. You may have to add a little more flour or buttermilk to get the right consistency. I don't normally have to do this.
  • 4
Pinch off pieces with floured hands and roll until smooth, making note not to over work dough.
  • 5
Place into well greased pan and bake at 425 for approximately 15-17 minutes or until golden brown. You can brush tops with butter if so desired.
