My husband and I came up with this recipe after collecting a lot of produce from our home garden.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

These are heavenly and perfect for summertime. By grilling the tomatoes first, it cooks them a bit before frying. This means they don't have to fry as long to achieve a perfect golden brown. Not oily, these fried green tomatoes have a wonderful crunch. The fresh salsa on top is the perfect accompaniment. Test Kitchen Avatar The Test Kitchen

How to Make Smoky Fried Green Tomatoes With Fresh Garden Salsa

Step-by-Step

  1. Slice green tomatoes. Rub olive oil, salt, and pepper on tomatoes before placing on the grill.
  2. Place on a hot, smokey grill. Grill for 3 minutes per side. Cool for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Take grilled tomatoes and dip in egg wash and cornmeal twice.
  4. Since tomatoes are already cooked fry slices in medium hot oil until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towel.
  5. Prepare the fresh salsa by combining all ingredients in a bowl.
  6. Place 2 slices on a serving plate. Top with a spoonful of sour cream and fresh salsa on top. Garnish with cilantro (optional).
