I LOVE these brownies! Unlike most other brownie recipes, these are not 'cake', nor are they 'fudge'. They are chewy and not too sweet. More like 'Blondies' but definitely chocolate. My mom made these all the time, and I made them when I was in my teens and early twenties. But as I got older, didn't bake, wanted to reduce my 'sweets' intake and then my mom died, and I no longer had the recipe. I found a 1951 edition of Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook on eBay and ordered it. Here the recipe, just as good as ever! But don't ask me what 'California' walnuts are, I have no idea how they differ from other walnuts.
