hearty logging camp soup

Since winter is on it's way, I thought I'd submit one of our favorite soup recipes. This has been in our family since the late 1940's when my dad worked in a logging camp. It was always called "Goop" in our family. This is a very versitle recipe. Some options are: add minced garlic when browning hamb., use ground turkey, add chili powder and it will taste like chili, etc. Make it your own! Since we are empty nesters I cut the recipe in half and even then I end up freezing enough for another meal.

Ingredients For hearty logging camp soup

  • 1 1/2 lb
    hamburger
  • 1/2
    diced onion
  • 2 can
    kidney beans, undrained (i use 1 light red, 1 dark red)
  • 2 can
    hominy, undrained (i use 1 yellow, 1 white)
  • 2 can
    diced (italian style) tomatoes
  • 1 can
    tomato sauce
  • 1 can
    water, as needed

How To Make hearty logging camp soup

  • 1
    Brown hamburger and onion in soup pot. Add rest of ingredients. You can make it as soupy as you want. Bring to a boil then turn down and simmer 1/2 to several hours. Serve with crusty french bread.
