my mom's spaghetti sauce

This is my Mom's recipe that has changed very little over the years. We never used precise measurements - a hand full of this, a pinch of that - so it's never exactly the same way twice.

Ingredients For my mom's spaghetti sauce

  • 1 lb
    good quality hamburger
  • 1 c
    chopped onion (1 onion)
  • 2 clove
    garlic, minced
  • 28 oz
    can of diced tomatoes
  • 4 can
    (15 ounce) tomato sauce
  • 1
    handfull dried oregano
  • 1
    handfull dried parsley
  • 1/2
    handfull dried basil
  • 1
    bay leaf
  • 1 pinch
    dried thyme, crushed
  • 1 Tbsp
    sugar
  • 1/2 c
    dry red wine (beer is good too)
  • 1 can
    tomato paste (the smallest size can)
  • pasta of your choice, we like angel hair
  • parmesan cheese as garnish

How To Make my mom's spaghetti sauce

    In a Dutch oven, oven medium heat cook hamburger, onion, and garlic, until meat is brown and onion is transparent. Drain fat.

    Add cans of tomatoes and sauce. Stir in oregano, parsley, basil, bay leaf, thyme, sugar and wine. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 2-3 hours, uncovered, stirring occasionally.

    In the last hour add the tomato paste, it will act as a thickener. When it's boiled down serve over warm pasta. Garnish with parmesan, and pass the garlic bread.
