This recipe has been in old family cookbooks for generations. I'm not surprised at its popularity, because it can be used in a variety of ways. We especially like it served over pound cake and gingerbread or simply topped with fresh strawberries.

Ingredients For custard sauce

  • 4
    beaten egg yolks
  • 1 dash
    salt
  • 1/4 c
    sugar
  • 2 c
    milk, scalded, and slightly cooled
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla

How To Make custard sauce

  • 1
    In a heavy saucepan, mix egg yolks, salt, and sugar. Gradually stir in scalded milk. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, till mixture coats a metal spoon.

    Remove from heat; cool in pan at once in cold water; stir a minute or two. Add vanilla. Stir Chill
