Pfeffernüsse (aka Pepper Nut) are slightly spicy, small round cookies made with all kinds of good things like butter, molasses, and spices.

Ingredients For pfeffernuss

  • 3/4 C. Light molasses
  • 1/2 C. Sugar
  • 1/2 C. Butter (or margarine)
  • 2 Eggs
  • 4 C. All purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. Ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/4 tsp. Baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. Ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. Ground nutmeg
  • Powdered sugar

How To Make pfeffernuss

    In a large saucepan combine molasses, sugar, and butter (or margarine). Heat and stir just until melted. Cool mixture. Add eggs. Using a wooden spoon, beat just until combined. Add about half of the flour. Then add the cinnamon, baking soda, cloves and nutmeg. Beat until thoroughly combined. Beat in remaining flour. Cover and chill for several hours or until easy to handle. Shape the dough into 1 inch balls. Place 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375F oven for about 7 minutes or until done. Remove cookies from the cookie sheet and cool on a wire rack. Sift powdered sugar over cookies.
