This is my personal version of this sweet & tangy appetizer. Good enough to be served as a side, such as I did tonight. They went well with crispy cheesy potato stuffed Pierogies. A Pennsylvania staple. I hope you try my version sometime. If you don't like the heat of the pepper flakes, just leave them out. They'll still be delicious!

Ingredients For ~ my saucy cranberry - chili sausage bites ~

  • 1 Tbsp
    oil
  • 1 lb
    each - kielbasa & bratwurst, sliced a little over 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 Tbsp
    chunky garlic paste - or minced garlic
  • 1/2
    of a small onion, minced
  • 1 bottle
    chili sauce
  • 1 can
    ocean spray whole cranberry sauce
  • 3/4 c
    dark brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp
    each - chili powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp
    cayenne pepper or to taste

How To Make ~ my saucy cranberry - chili sausage bites ~

    Add oil to a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot add the sausages, garlic and onion. Cook and stir until onion is tender and sausages are caramelizing. About 5 minutes. Remove from skillet & drain.

    In the same skillet. Add the cranberry sauce, chili sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder and heat over medium. Stir well to blend and keep stirring as the cranberry sauce melts and sugar dissolves. Simmer about 5 minutes.

    Add the sausage back to the pan and stir to coat with sauce. Add the pepper flakes now if using. Simmer for about 20 minutes or until desired thickness of the sauce.

    Serve as an appetizer or as a side for dinner. These are great for parties. Keep warm in a crock pot. Serve with tooth picks if serving as an appetizer.
