I got the basic recipe from my grandmother, I think every family has a similar recipe. She had to be creative when cooking for 5 kids and a hungry husband on a very limited budget. This is definitely a family favorite :)

Ingredients For grandma's "goulache"

  • 2 lb
    ground beef
  • 1 md
    sweet onion, diced
  • 1/2-1 c
    celery, chopped
  • 5-6 c
    large elbow macaroni, uncooked
  • 3 can
    diced tomatoes
  • 2 1/4 c
    tomato juice (like v8)
  • 1 Tbsp
    paprika, or to preference
  • 1/2 tsp
    dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp
    onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp
    onion salt
  • 1/4 tsp
    celery salt
  • 1/4 c
    fresh italian parsley, finely chopped
  • salt and pepper to taste

How To Make grandma's "goulache"

  • 1
    In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, brown meat and drain. Add onion and celery with a dash of salt and saute until onions are just softened (do not brown).

    Add tomatoes, tomato juice, seasonings and macaroni. Simmer, covered, over low heat for 20-25 minutes, or until noodles are fork tender.

    If sauce is still liquidy, remove cover and allow to simmer an additional 5 minutes or so.
