  Melt 1/2 tbs butter in a heavy bottom skillet over medium high heat. place two slices of bread in the skillet and swirl until all the butter is absorbed. Toast until very light golden brown, about 1 minute. remove from pan and place on a cutting board place one slice of American cheese on the toasted side of each slice of bread. Add another 1/2 tbs of butter and repeat with remaining bread after removed from the pan top them with 1 slice of cheddar each.

  Assemble the sandwiches so that each has one slice of American and one slice of chedder, with untoasted sides out. Melt 1 tbs of butter in the skillet over med low heat. sprinkle the skillet with 1/2 tsp of salt, add the sandwiches swirling them around the pan ubtil all butter is absorbed. toast til the first side is a deep golden brown. about 3 minutes. reduce the heat if the butter begins to burn.

  Remove the sandwiches and melt the remaining tbs of butter, sprinkle with another 1/2 tsp of salt then return the sandwiches untoasted side down and swirl until the butter is absorbed. toast until the second side is a deep golden brown and the cheese is thoroughly melted. about 3 minutes.

  Cut the sandwiches on the diagonal and serve immediately.
