This is the best soup of this genre that I have ever eaten. I got it from the cook at a kiosk that was set up outside a Haunted House display on Halloween 1983. It is so hearty and nouishing. I hope you enjoy the wonderful flavors of the season.

Ingredients For genuine mexican tortilla soup

  • 6 clove
    chopped garlic
  • 3 lg
    diced onion
  • 3 Tbsp
    real butter
  • 3 Tbsp
    vegetable oil
  • 2 lg
    can whole green chilies. cut into slices
  • 4
    fresh yellow chilies chopped
  • 2 lg
    cans chopped tomatoes
  • 2 sm
    cans, el pato hot tomato sauce
  • 2 lg
    can chicken stock
  • 2 tsp
    chili powder
  • 2 tsp
    cumin
  • 1/2 tsp
    oregano, dried
  • 2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 c
    fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1
    bag of juanita's tortilla chips
  • grated jack cheese or pepper jack cheese

How To Make genuine mexican tortilla soup

    Saute onions and garlic in butter and oilC Combine all other ingredients except tortilla chips and cheese. Simmer in large pot for 1 hour Serve in soup bowls

    On top of soup, crumble tortilla chips and grated jack cheese Place under broiler until cheese is melted You may add shredded pork or chicken to make this a more hearty soup.
