Ingredients For sloppy joes

  • 2lbs. ground beef
  • 1 largeonion, minced
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tsp. worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups catsup
  • 1 to 2 tsp. chili powder
  • 16 hamburger buns

How To Make sloppy joes

    Cook beef, onion, salt and pepper in large skillet, stirring til beef loses its red color. Stir in flour, water, Worcestershire, catsup, and chili powder. Simmer uncovered 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Split and toast buns. Spoon mixture over toasted buns. Serves 16

    Sloppy Joses: Prepare sloppy Joe mixture but increase chili powder to 3 or 4 tsp. Just before serving, stir in a can of undrained kidney or pinto beans. Serve over tortillas, which have been crisped in oil or toasted bun halves.

    Sloppy Giovannis: Prepare sloppy Joe mixture but omit chili powder and season with garlic, a bay leaf and 1/2 tsp. basil. Stir in canned or cooked sliced mushrooms just before serving on toasted Italian rolls.

    Sloppy Josefs: Prepare sloppy Joe mixture but omit catsup and chili powder. Use half beef broth and half dry red wine for liquid. Stir in cooked or canned sliced mushrooms and small whole onions sauteed in butter just before serving. Serve on Kaiser rolls.
