This is one of the easiest homemade soup recipes I have. I make it more frequently in the winter months, but if you are a fan of French onion soup it's a great recipe any time of year.

Ingredients For french onion soup

  • 1/4 c
    salted butter
  • 3 c
    thinly sliced onions
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 Tbsp
    all-purpose flour
  • 4 c
    beef stock, homemade or store-bought
  • opional: toasted french bread slices, shredded swiss and parmesan cheeses

How To Make french onion soup

    In a deep skillet or Dutch oven, combine onions and butter. Cover and cook gently for 15 minutes or until onions are tender.

    Blend in salt and flour. Add beef stock and heat until boiling. Reduce heat and simmer covered for 1 hour.

    If desired, float toasted French bread slices on individual bowls of soup and spinkle with shredded Swiss and Parmesan cheeses. Heat in a 425 degree oven for 10 minutes.
