Braciole (bra-CHOH-lah) is an Italian word that means steak. This is a very tasty dish using round steak, with very little effort. Serve it with mashed potatoes or jasmine rice and a side vegetable. MMMM-MMMM good.

  • 2-1/2 lb
    beef round steak, boneless
  • 1/2 to 1 lb
    italian sausage
  • 1/3 bunch
    cilantro, fresh
  • 1/4 c
    grated parmesan or italian blend cheese
  • 1 clove
    garlic
  • 1 tsp
    italian seasoning
  • 2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    lemon pepper seasoning
  • 1 lg
    white onion
  • 2 lg
    carrots
  • 2 Tbsp
    olive oil
  • 1 can
    hunts fire roasted diced tomatoes (15 oz)
  • 1 can
    hunts tomato paste (6 oz)
  • 1-1/2 c
    dry red wine
  • 1
    bay leaf
  • 2
    celery ribs

How To Make braciole (steak rolls) by sallye

    Turn crockpot on to high Peel onions and carrots and cut into quarters Cut celery ribs into 3 equal pieces Place onion, carrots, and celery in food processor and pulse until finely diced Set aside

    Trim all fat from steak and cut meat into 8 equal pieces Using wooden mallet pound pieces until very thin Set aside

    Remove casing from Italian sausage and break up into a medium sized mixing bowl Peel garlic clove and smash Add cilantro, cheese, garlic, Italian seasoning, lemon pepper seasoning and 1 teaspoon salt Mix thoroughly (I do this with my hands)

    Lay steak pieces out on cutting board or waxed paper Spread each piece with 2 heaping tablespoons of sausage mixture Roll up jelly-roll fashion and fasten with toothpicks or tie with twine

    Heat olive oil in heavy skillet to medium hot Brown steak rolls on all sides Remove from skillet and set aside on plate

    In same pan, brown onions, celery and carrots until soft (about 5 minutes) Add in wine, tomatoes, tomato paste, 1 teaspoon salt and bay leaf Bring mixture to a boil, scraping bottom of pan with wooden spoon to deglaze

    When boiling, transfer to crockpot which has been preheated on high heat Turn crockpot down to low heat Add steak rolls to crockpot with broth mixture and cook on low for 4-5 hours until steak is tender. Remove the picks or twine before serving

    Good served with mashed potatoes or noodles and a vegetable side dish.
