In French, this drink is simply called "Soixante Quinze". The drink dates to World War I, and an early form was created in 1915 at the New York Bar in Paris. The combination was said to have such a kick that it felt like being shelled with the powerful French 75mm field gun.

    gin
  • 3 oz
    fresh lemon juice
  • 4 tsp
    superfine granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 c
    ice cubes
  • 1 c
    chilled champagne

    In a cocktail shaker combine gin, lemonjuice, sugar and ice cubes and shake to chill. Strain cocktail into 2 wineglasses and top off with Champagne.
