3/4 cvegetable shortening

1 cfirmly packed brown sugar

1/2 cgranulated sugar

1/4 cwater

1 tspvanilla

3 coats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked )

1 call purpose flour

1 tspsalt (optional)

1/2 tspbaking soda
How To Make famous oatmeal cookies

1Preheat oven to 375 degrees F In large bowl, beat shortening, brown sugar and granulated sugar on medium speed until creamy.

2Add egg, water and vanilla; beat well. Add combined oats, flour, salt and baking soda; mix well. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet.

3Bake 9 to 11 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Remove to wire rack; cool completely. Store tightly covered.

4Variations: My Own Special Cookies: Stir in 1 cup total (any combination of) raisins, chopped nuts, semisweet chocolate pieces or flaked coconut. Large Cookies: Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls. Bake 12 to 14 minutes at 375 degrees F.
