My Granddaughter Alyssa has helped me make these since She was able to roll the dough. They have since been one of her Specialties. She Takes after Her Great Grandma Frohman; Me; and Her Father Aaron in the kitchen.

Ingredients For alyssa's candy cane cookies

  • 1 c
    shortening
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 c
    powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    almond extract
  • 2 1/2 c
    flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    red food coloring drops
  • 1/2 c
    crushed peppermint candies
  • 1/2 c
    sugar

How To Make alyssa's candy cane cookies

    Cream together the shortening, egg, sugar, almond extract and vanilla.

    Stir in and blend well the flour and salt. Divide dough in half, add red food color to one portion and blend until no streaks remain. Roll 1 tsp of each color the thickness of a pencil, about 4 inches long. Use powdered sugar for rolling. Lay strips side by side and roll together, twist to make stripes alternate, shape into cane shape.

    Bake, but do not brown. While hot from oven, sprinkle with following mixture. 1/2 cup each crushed peppermint candy and granulated sugar.
