The cost of donuts at the bakery or supermarket is out of sight, & sometimes they aren't as fresh as I'd like...you can make these at a fraction of the cost, choose your own toppings and/or fillings and enjoy them without ever leaving the house! I make these fairly often, kids love them, as well as the adults! Give them a try & see if you don't give up those expensive ones!

  • 1 Tbsp
    butter, softened
  • 2 Tbsp
    cocoa powder
  • 1 Tbsp
    hot coffee
  • maple or vanilla extract (optional)

  • confectioners' sugar (optional)
  • cinnamon-sugar (optional)
  • sprinkles (optional)

How To Make the grandest donuts

  • 1
Heat oil in deep pan or deep fryer to 375°F.
  • 2
Open tube(s) of biscuits and separate. Using a 1" cutter, cut out a hole in center of each biscuit. OR if you want to do filled donuts, leave as is to fry.
  • 3
Gently lower 2-3 donuts into hot oil, fry for a minute or so, flip over using the handle of a wooden spoon through center hole; if no hole, then just flip over gently with bowl of wooden spoon. When frying the 'holes', turn them over gently with spoon.
  • 4
Using tongs, gently remove from hot oil and place on rack with paper towels to drain. Let cool til you can handle them.
  • 5
If you choose to frost them: Combine confectioners' sugar, cocoa, butter and coffee in medium bowl. Mix until smooth, then place donuts, one at a time, in bowl & gently turn in circular motion to coat the tops. If you want other than chocolate, omit the cocoa and add your desired flavoring. If desired, apply sprinkles by dipping the frosted top into a wide, shallow bowl of sprinkles.
  • 6
To make sugared donuts, place granulated sugar/confectioners' sugar/cinnamon sugar in deep bowl or paper bag, add donuts one at a time and shake to cover.
  • 7
For filled donuts: Use your favorite jelly or cream filling. Use a straw to poke hole halfway into the donut, then pipe filling through pastry tip into the hole. Can then also sprinkle with desired sugar topping or frost as above.

One package of biscuits makes 8 donuts and 8 holes, or 8 filled donuts.
