Here's a old recipe that is very good. Grandma made this one from memory and wrote down the instructions for me. In the 1940's this was a birthday cake or special occasion dessert.

Ingredients For saucepan cake (from the 1940's)

  • 2
    squares semi-sweet chocolate
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 Tbsp
    butter
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1 c
    raisins
  • 1 1/2 c
    water
  • 1 1/2 c
    flour
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp
    nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp
    ground cloves
  • whipped cream

How To Make saucepan cake (from the 1940's)

    Combine chocolate, salt, butter, sugar, raisins, and water in a heavy saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly until mixture reaches a full boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and then cook for 5 minutes at a simmer without stirring. Remove from heat and let stand 15 minutes.

    Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. At the end of the 15 minutes setting time for chocolate mixture stir dry ingredients into chocolate mixture. Fold in nuts. Do not beat. Only stir until mixed. Pour batter into a greased 8 inch square pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until cake pulls away from sides of pan. Serve warm with whipped cream.
