I found this in an old recipe book that belonged to my mother, who was born in 1906. Her grandmother, my great-, Catherine Dipboye May, was born in 1850. This is her favorite cake, also known as Rochester Cake.

Ingredients For my great-grandma catherine may's favorite cake

  • 1/2 c
    shortening
  • 1 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 2
    eggs
  • 3 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 2 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    ground cloves
  • 1 tsp
    nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 c
    sour milk (may substitute buttermilk)
  • CREAM CHEESE FROSTING
  • 1 pkg
    (8 oz.) cream cheese
  • 1 box
    powdered sugar
  • 1/2 stick
    butter (do not use margarine!)
  • 2 tsp
    vanilla

How To Make my great-grandma catherine may's favorite cake

    Cream the shortening with the sugar and beat until fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. Add flour, soda, salt and spices alternately with sour milk; beat thoroughly.

    Pour batter into 2 greased layer cake pans (or a 13x9" baking pan). Bake for 30 minutes in a 350-degree oven or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

    To make frosting, combine ingredients in medium bowl and mix well. Carefully spread on cooled cake. You may sprinkle some chopped pecans or walnuts over top of frosting if you like.
