This is a recipe from my husband John’s Grandmother (Grandmom Elaine’s mother) that was written in a local hometown recipe book, made for a fundraiser. "The Art of Cooking in Egg Harbor City" (NJ). There is no date on the cookbook, so I don't know exactly when it was printed. I've written the directions exactly as she had them listed.

Ingredients For great-grandmom kuppel's date cake

  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1/4 c
    butter
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 1/2 c
    sifted flour
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1/3 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 c
    chopped dates
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 c
    nuts - walnuts

How To Make great-grandmom kuppel's date cake

    Pour 1 cup boiling water over the cup of dates and 1 tsp. baking soda.

    Let stand while the rest is being mixed. Then add all together.

    Pour into a pan 9x12 inches. Then put nuts on top.

    Bake 35 minutes in 350 degree oven.
