Ingredients For a & j's french toast

  • 8 pieces french bread, sliced about 1- inch thick
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups whole or 2% milk
  • dash salt
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • maple syrup

How To Make a & j's french toast

  • 1
Mix the eggs, milk, salt and vanilla. Place the french bread slices in a 13x9 baking dish and pour the egg mixture over them. Shake a moderate amount of nutmeg (I also added a 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon) over the soaking bread and let sit until most of the egg mixture is absorbed, about 10 minutes, carefully flipping once.

Using a spatula, lift the bread slices onto a lightly greased (use 1-2 tsp. butter; add more as neeed) griddle/fry pan over moderate heat. Check for browness on the bottom after about 3-5 minutes. When golden, flip the slices over and immediately place about a 2- tsp. pat of butter on top of each piece. Let the butter melt somewhat before heavily sprinkling powdered sugar on top. Continue cooking for 5-6 minutes until golden brown on the other side.

    Serve with maple syrup.
