meme's cinnamon rolls

My earliest memory of these cinnamon rolls is “helping” Meme and Aunt Nell make them at Aunt Nell’s house, when I was probably 7-8 years old. These rolls are made by taking a batch of Meme’s homemade bread dough (see my recipe entitled "Homemade White Bread") and adding the below ingredients. The smell of these rolls baking is simply heavenly – and they have a crispy, bubbly crust that is so much better than any other cinnamon roll I have ever eaten.

Ingredients For meme's cinnamon rolls

  • 1
    batch of homemade bread dough
  • 2 stick
    butter, salted
  • 6-8 Tbsp
    cinnamon
  • 2 c
    sugar, white

How To Make meme's cinnamon rolls

  • 1
When homemade bread dough reaches the second rising stage, turn dough out onto floured surface.
  • 2
Form the dough into a long roll, about the length of two loaf pans placed end-to-end.
  • 3
With a rolling pin, roll the dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  • 4
Spread a thick layer of butter over the dough rectangle. Sprinkle sugar thickly and evenly over the dough (may need to use more than 2 cups sugar).
  • 5
Next, sprinkle the cinnamon over the sugar – do not be stingy with the cinnamon. There should be a solid brown covering over the dough, when completed.
  • 6
Along one long edge of the rectangle, roll the dough tightly (like a long jelly roll).
  • 7
Slice the dough into 1-inch slices (use dental floss for slicing). Place the slices in a greased baking pan and allow them to rise.
  • 8
Bake at 350 degrees until sugar and butter have bubbled over and formed a crispy topping.
  • 9
HINT/SUGGESTION: If you’ve done it right, these will be the best cinnamon rolls you’ve ever tasted. If they’re not, then you probably need more butter, sugar or cinnamon - just keep practicing!
