Hot Dog Toppings Add Fun Flavor to Your Labor Day Cookout

You Saucey Little Dog Sauce

Where has summer gone?! It seems like just yesterday we were gearing up for grilling season. I know technically there are a few weeks left, but Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer.

This year, I am hosting our annual neighborhood cookout. We'll serve the traditional fare ... hot dogs, burger, salads, beans, etc. I've decided to also do a hot dog topping bar. I think guests will love turning their hot dogs into something special. And, of course, I know where to look for the perfect recipes.

Pickle relish has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. My grandmother used to make one that I loved. Norma deRemer and Lynda Kolbinskie have great recipes that put a yummy twist on one of my favorite toppings.

"I started making this when I first got married," says Norma of her Norma's Hot Dog and Hamburger Relish recipe. "I have also used cucumbers, but prefer green tomatoes." The flavors in this sweet relish are perfect. You'll be using this on everything ... and you'll have enough because this recipe makes a lot. It's so tasty!

"Hands down, my all-time favorite hot dog relish," exclaims Lynda about her Favorite Zucchini Hot Dog Relish. I have enjoyed relish all my life. But, I don't think I have ever had one with zucchini. This recipe intrigued me ... and I loved it! The flavors are tasty and it really gave my hot dog an extra zing. I can't wait to try it on beans and vegetables too.

Jen Smallwood's Michigan Hot Dog Sauce is yum-my! "[This is] a spicy, tangy sauce for hot dogs, french fries or hamburgers," shares Jen. I love the versatility of this recipe. We initially tried it on french fries like Jen suggested and it was a big hit in the Test Kitchen. It'easy to make too. The hardest part is waiting for it to simmer on the stove for two hours and not dig in.

"This is a spicy sauce I created," says Dee Tourville. "[It's] not for the little ones or the faint of heart." With 7 teaspoons of chili powder, red pepper flakes and hot sauce, her You Saucey Little Dog Sauce recipe packs a flavor punch. This definitely adds a nice kick to your hot dog.

New York native Lillian Russo's recipe for Hot Dog Onions would be a great addition to your toppings bar. "I tried many different hot dog onion recipes," explains Lillian. "I mixed and matched them until I got the perfect combination!" These onions are quick and easy to prepare. And, you can easily double or triple the recipe if you have a big crowd. The hot pepper sauce and cayenne add a very slight heat. But you can tailor that to suit your palate.

Whether you decide to stick with mustard and ketchup or try one of these tasty toppings, we're sure your Labor Day cookout will be a success. How can it not be when you have friends, family and, of course, great food!

What about chile and Cole slaw? A hot dog isn't right without chili & slaw :)

I am still waiting for my services to be fixed: Can't use "Start A New Discussion" button, Search bar, Notations circle or bubble to show "been read", Share button on recipes, & a couple of other things, I can't think of at the moment. But, they all seem to go out together. Being made to "log in" various times of the day & night. I had already reported some of these, but nothing done, since then.

This site has knocked me off of my computer 4 times, and each time I have had to change my password to get back on. :(
