Packed with nutrients like vitamin C and K, cabbage is inexpensive and a delicious ingredient to add to recipes. Plus, it’s green so it is considered a “lucky” food. Being that it’s just the beginning of the new year, it’s the perfect time to incorporate more cabbage into a menu. Can’t we can all use a little luck? If you’ve only had it steamed and think you don’t like cabbage, trust me. These simple recipes will change the way you think about cabbage.<\/p>\n

“I love when my mom and grandma would make these Cabbage Burgers<\/a>,” reminisces Brenda Broadfood<\/a> (Tecumseh, NE<\/a>). “It was always such a treat.”<\/p>\n

With a flavor combination unlike anything I’ve tried before, I was in love at first bite. The filling is hamburger meat, diced onion, and browned cabbage. That’s all encased in homemade bread baked until golden brown. Yum! This recipe makes a lot but they’ll freeze wonderfully.<\/p>\n

Bubble and Squeak<\/a> is a traditional English breakfast made from cabbage and onions. It gets its name from the sound the cabbage makes while cooking. I love Sea Sun’s<\/a> (Urbandale, IA<\/a>) version.<\/p>\n

The potatoes get brown and crispy. The cabbage almost becomes caramelized while sizzling in the skillet. Sea uses bacon and ham in the dish which definitely adds a smokey flavor. Extremely hearty, it is a great recipe if you’re looking to do breakfast for dinner one night.<\/p>\n

Cabbage in salsa… who knew? Well, Vicki Moser<\/a> (Kennewick, WA<\/a>) did when she shared her Cabbage Salsa<\/a>. <\/p>\n

“I make this once a week; my family and friends love it,” explains Vicki. “I can’t take it to a function without the recipe to hand out.”<\/p>\n

This recipe is a delicious combination of flavors. Cabbage is sliced and tossed with green onion, cilantro, jalapenos, a bit of lemon juice, spices and other ingredients. Then the mixture is left to sit so the flavors have a chance to meld together. <\/p>\n

Wow, we were thrilled with the results in the Test Kitchen. When you try this, make sure to have an ample amount of tortilla chips out for dipping. It’s not a traditional salsa, but it’s quite tasty.<\/p>\n

Made to order egg rolls? Yes, please! I’m a big fan of Helene Mulvihill’s<\/a> (Magnolia, TX<\/a>) Homemade Egg Rolls<\/a>. These fresh and flavorful rolls are fun. Sure, they take a good bit of time to put together, but the effort is well worth it. <\/p>\n

Shredded cabbage is the base, but from there you can really customize the flavors based on your taste buds. In general, Helene adds chicken, carrot, zucchini, and onion. When stuffed into a wonton wrapper and dipped in her tangy soy sauce mixture, these are just as good as anything you’d get from take-out.<\/p>\n

“This Spicy Cajun Cabbage<\/a> dish is wonderful for potlucks or just for the family,” says Julie McLaughlin<\/a> (Drummonds, TN<\/a>). “You can control the spices.”<\/p>\n

I’ll admit, my expectations were high for this dish since I love cabbage so much. After my first bite, all my tasty hopes for the dish were achieved and then some.<\/p>\n

The mixture of the seasonings is spot on and the bacon was the perfect finishing touch. I would serve this tasty side to anyone any day of the week!<\/p>\n
