split pea soup

This was the soup my mother made while my brother and sister were growing up. She used ham hocks while I use a ham bone and add a touch of sherry at the end. Cut up hot dogs were added but with the ham bone, there's enough meat to put in. It is sooooo good and special!

Ingredients For split pea soup

  • 1 lb
    green split peas
  • 1
    ham bone
  • 4 c
    chicken broth
  • 4 c
    water
  • 2
    celery, chopped
  • 2
    carrots, chopped
  • 1
    onion, chopped
  • 1
    leek, chopped
  • 2
    garlic, finely minced
  • 3 Tbsp
    parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp
    tarragon ,
  • 1 tsp
    savory
  • 1
    bay leaf
  • 2 Tbsp
    dry sherry (optional )

How To Make split pea soup

    Sauté the vegetables until tender, about 10 mins in olive oil.

    Bring to boil the broth, water, the split peas picked over, and the ham bone. Reduce to a simmer.

    Add vegetables to the broth. Simmer until peas are tender. Remove ham bone and remove as much of the meat on the bone.

    Puree either in a blender or immersion blender until desired consistency. Add the ham meat or diced hot dogs until warm.
