I haven't tried this recipe yet, but found it in a magazine and thought it might warrant my trying it.

Stove Top
Ingredients For onion soup

2 Tbspbutter, unsalted

3 cvidalia or sweet onions (2 large)

2 clovegarlic, minced

2 1/2 Tbspall purpose flour

6 creduced-sodium chicken broth
-
1 cwhite wine
-
1/4 tspfresh thyme
-
1/2 tspsalt
-
coarsely ground black pepper
-
6baguette slices
-
1/2 cshredded swiss or gruyere cheese
How To Make onion soup

1Melt butter in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onions and garlic; cook until very soft and golden, about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

2Sprinkle flour over onions, stirring to coat thoroughly. Add broth, wine and thyme; cover and simmer about 30 minutes. Add salt and pepper.

3Top baguette slices with cheese and broil until melted. Ladle soup into bowls and top with baguette slices.
