My husbands favorite soup is split pea. I did not grow up with this so had to learn. After 30 years he likes mine better than mom's!

Ingredients For split pea soup

  • 1 lb
    split peas, dry
  • 8 c
    water
  • 2
    celery ribs, diced
  • 1
    onion, grated
  • 3
    carrots, chopped
  • 1 clove
    garlic
  • 1
    ham bone
  • 1 tsp
    dried basil
  • splash of worcestershire sauce
  • salt and pepper to taste

How To Make split pea soup

  • 1
    Clean and sort dry split peas. Put cleaned split peas in large pot with water. Bring to a boil for 2 minutes. Cover, remove from burner and let set 1 hour.

    Add celery, onion, garlic, carrots and hambone to peas and water. Simmer on stovetop for few hours until peas are tender.

    Remove hambone and cool. Add basil, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Removed cooled ham from bone and return to pot.

    TIP: never add salt to soup until peas are tender. If you add salt at the beginning the peas will never get soft.
