Portuguese Red Bean Soup

My grandmother in Hawaii was Portuguese, and this soup is traditional, especially at Pentecost. This is the recipe that has been handed down to me, and it's something I absolutely love. Although the recipe calls for ham hocks, a meaty ham bone can be used as well.

Ingredients

2
meaty smoked ham hocks or ham bone
2 can(s)
red kidney beans
2 clove
garlic, minced
1/2 head
cabbage, shredded
1 can(s)
tomato sauce
1 lb
chorizo (mexican sausage, mild or medium
water
enough to cover

Directions Step-By-Step

Place all ingredients in a large pot; heat to boiling. Simmer for 2 to 3 hours. Remove hock bones.
Serve with garlic bread, if desired.
