This is a very old recipe, from the 1800's -- even older than me!

Ingredients

1
peck of sweet apples
1/2 gal
sugar
1 tsp
cinnamon
1 tsp
cloves
1 pt
cider vinegar
cinnamon sticks, if you wish

Directions Step-By-Step

1
Pare, core, and halve the apples.
2
Cover the apples overnight with the sugar.
3
Next morning, set them on the fire, and add the cinnamon and the cloves.
4
Cook the apples until they are easily stuck with a fork.
5
Add the vinegar, and boil another five minutes.
6
Seal in jars while the apples are still very hot.
7
A cinnamon stick can be added to each jar, if you wish.

Hi,
My grandmother made these and I would love to do it too. My father used to tell me there was a certain type of apple that is best for this...very big, and very hard...but I cannot think of the name of the apple now. Do you recall ever getting this information?
