Thomas Jefferson Candied Tomatoes

1 tbsp. butter
1 chopped onion
1 quart tomatoes (canned may be used)
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 t. salt
1 tbsp. basil


1Melt butter in skillet and brown onion. Add tomatoes, salt, sugar and basil.
2Simmer over low heat for 4 to 5 hours ( that's right, honey;the recipes says 4 to 5 hours, not minutes) or until sticky. Stir occasionally.
Serves 6
