Polish Sauerkraut

Colleen's Story

This was my Polish mother-in-law's recipe... It is so easy... and so good!

The onion and apple and butter browned together give the sauerkraut a gentler yet full flavor.


2 large
onions (diced)
2 large
apples (diced) (can use more if you like)
2 qt
sauerkraut (store bought or homemade)
4 Tbsp
butter (or margarine)

Directions Step-By-Step

Saute' the onions and apples in the butter. Brown them (be careful not to burn them!)
Add sauerkraut juice to the pan and stir well to get all the caramelized drippings blended in... the liquid will be brown. Stir in the sauerkraut, and heat through before serving.
*** I make it this way for a side dish, pork roast or brats.

    Hay Colleen, How did you know that I was Polish? This recipe is to-die-for. I remember when I was a kid my Grandma made Polish sausage and Sauerkraut. Oh yummy yum yum.

    Thank you Brenda! My married name is Polish... I am Irish... but I love Polish foods and so does my 1/2 Polish daughter! Thank you for adding me as a favorite cook... hope I can live up to it! I use to live in Chicago, which has the largest Polish population outside of Warsaw Poland! Oh the foods they have there!

    I am new to this recipe club, and I've added you to my list of favorites...I have been looking over your recipes and you have no idea how happy they make me....The first thing that caught my eye was your Irish potato stuffing (which is the only stuffing my mother ever made for the Holidays)...I too am Irish, and grew up in a predominately Irish/polish neighborhood in South Boston....with many Irish and Polish friends...loving the Kapusta, Galumpki, fresh keilbasa, etc. along with the smoked shoulder,Cabbage, Irish bread, and the Irish stew from my Mothers kitchen!.....Looking forward to trying some of your recipes!.....Nice to meet you, Colleen!.....Sincerely, Kay :))
