Ingredients For cabbage casserole

  • 1
    cabbage head
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 2 c
    cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 1/2 c
    bread crumbs, buttered
  • BASIC WHITE SAUCE:
  • 2 Tbsp
    butter
  • 2 Tbsp
    flour
  • 2 c
    heavy cream
  • 1 tsp
    salt and pepper

How To Make cabbage casserole

    Shred cabbage. Cook 5 - 8 minutes in boiling water with salt. Don't over cook; cabbage should remain crisp. Drain well & transfer to a large bowl.

    Grease a 2 qt. casserole dish.

    MAKE BASIC WHITE SAUCE: To make a roux, melt butter in a small sized sauce pot & add flour, salt & pepper & bring to a boil. Set aside. Put milk in a medium sized sauce pot & bring to boil. As the milk begins to boil, whip roux into milk. Continue to whip until sauce comes back to a boil.

    In the bowl where cabbage is...pour roux in & mix well. Stir in cheese. Pour into greased casserole dish & top with buttered bread crumbs.

    Cook at 300 degrees F for 20 minutes. Enjoy!
