This was my Grandma's recipe to use up extra onions in her garden. She made everything from scratch, including pie crust. I make it easier by using store bought pie crust.

Ingredients For grandma's onion pie

  • 3 lg
    sweet onions, sliced thin
  • 1 Tbsp
    butter
  • 3 lg
    eggs
  • 2 c
    cream or half and half
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp
    paprika
  • 6 slice
    bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1/2 c
    shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1
    pastry for double crust pie

How To Make grandma's onion pie

    In a skillet, saute onions in butter, stiring constantly, until golden brown and carmelized.

    In a bowl, beat together eggs and cream. Add the onions, salt, pepper, and paprika.

    Line a deep-dish 9 inch pie plate with bottom pastry. Add egg mixture; sprinkle with bacon and cheese. Roll out remaining pastry to fit top of pie. Place over filling. Seal and flute the edges; cut slits in top.

    Bake at 350 degrees F for 55-60 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Let stand 15 minutes before cutting. Refrigerate leftovers.
