My family loves potatoes,this is a dish I remember my Mother making when I was young,I never got her recipe,so this is how I remember,which is how I usually cook,remembering what her ingredients and how she made it. My Mother & Grandmother didn't use very many recipes and they didn't write anything down. Cheese is optional.
I use Yukon gold potatoes or russets.
Toss potatoes,salt and pepper in a greased baking dish.Layer potatoes in the baking dish,scattering butter over potatoes. Pour milk over potatoes just to cover.Cover with a top or tightly with foil. Bake until potatoes are tender. Remove cover or foil,turn oven up to 400 degrees to lightly brown potatoes and to absorb any milk that may remain.
