The original recipe says you can use 1 pound of ground beef in place of the bacon. Our family prefers the bacon. Pork fat rules with baked beans in my book.

Ingredients For calico beans

  • 2 can
    large bushes baked beans ... original baked flavor, turns out best
  • 2 can
    butter beans or lima beans ...drained
  • 2 can
    light kidney beans ... drained
  • 1 lb
    bacon ... fried out crisp
  • 1/2 c
    ketchup
  • 1/2 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 Tbsp
    yellow mustard
  • dash
    salt n pepper to taste
  • 1 Tbsp
    red wine vinegar
  • 1 c
    chopped onion

How To Make calico beans

    Brown bacon fry out crisp... Combine drained beans and bacon mixture in slow cooker with remaining ingredients; cover and cook on LOW for 3 to 5 hours.

    You can use any combination of beans you have on hand as long as you start with the Bushes baked as a base. 1 butter and 1 lima or no butter 1 lima and 2 kidney ...
